How To use Unhide

Malware hiding all your files? Unhide them with unhide.exe. Many malware programs make it look like you lost all of your files but really they are just hidden.

iTunes 10 Install Error "a network error occurred while attempting to read from the file: C: WINDOWS\Installer\Quicktime.msi" and "The installation of Quicktime did not complete successfully. iTunes requires Quicktime."

I ran into this error on a computer recently, and found a sure fire way to fix it. If your iTunes installation says “a network error occurred” and then quotes c:\windows\installer\(file).msi then there is a very easy way to fix this.

Download iTunesSetup.exe and place it on the desktop for ease of locating it.

Download and install 7zip from http://www.7zip.com.

Right click on iTunesSetup.exe and go to ‘7zip’ and then click on “Extract o iTunesSetup\”

Now you’ve got a folder with all the installation files.¬† They are:
AppleApplicationSupport.msi
AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi
AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
Bonjour.msi
iTunes.msi
QuickTime.msi
SetupAdmin.exe

Now, move all of those files into the c:\windows\installer\ window you opened at the beginning. Once moved, run the SetupAdmin.exe file. Install will proceed as normal.

PS- this fix is completely original. I did not copy this content from anywhere. I banged my head against the wall for 2.5 hours before it dawned on me what I should do.

How To Repair XP Automatic Update service when it has been deleted

After removing that XP Antivirus 2011 malware, I had two XP machines that did not have the Automatic Updates service even installed, and therefore it would not run. After some googling I found the Microsoft KB883614 that addresses both this problem, and that of the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) missing. I’ve copy/pasted it for simplicity.

The Automatic Updates service is missing

To reinstall the Automatic Updates service, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
    %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\au.inf
  2. If you are prompted to insert your operating system CD, type the following path in the Copy files from box, and then click OK:
    %windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386

Note This location contains the most recently updated service pack files. If you cannot use this path to copy the required files from, insert your operating system CD, and then click OK.

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service is missing

To reinstall the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
    %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\qmgr.inf
